Sun King Taproom & Distillery is a 15,000-square-foot food hall maze of bars, restaurants, dining areas, markets and distillery operations at 351 Monon Trail, a block south of Main Street in Carmel.
Sun King Brewery soon will have a brick-and-mortar presence in Broad Ripple, thanks to the company’s purchase of the former Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co.
Indianapolis-based Sun King bought the Thr3e Wise Men site, 1021 Broad Ripple Ave., during a Thursday auction overseen by Key Auctioneers.
The new Sun King Broad Ripple Tap Room is projected to open this fall and become one of five Sun King locations in Central Indiana, joining the original brewery, 135 N. College Ave.; a small-batch brewery and tap room in Fishers, 7848 E. 96th St.; a distillery in Carmel, 351 Monon Blvd.; and an under-construction site at The Yard at Fishers District, I-69 and 116th Street.
Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. opened as a Scotty’s Brewhouse property in January 2011 and closed this June. Scotty’s Brewhouse was founded in 1996 by Indiana native Scott Wise, who sold the restaurant chain to Arizona-based Due North Holdings LLC in 2016.
In December, the chain filed for bankruptcy and announced the closures of restaurants in Indianapolis, Carmel, Muncie and Waco, Texas. More closings have followed.
Sun King, meanwhile, collected top honors at the 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship last month. The company opened in 2009 as the first full-scale production brewery in Indianapolis since 1948.
Sun King co-founders and owners Dave Colt and Clay Robinson said the Broad Ripple tap room will serve Sun King beers and spirits as well as adult and non-alcoholic slushies.
“Supporting local is at the heart of our mission, and we’re actively searching for a food partner that will complement our world-class beverage program and give our patrons another reason to visit and love Sun King,” Colt said in a statement. “It’s important to note that we couldn’t have gotten to where we are today without support of the bars, restaurants, and liquor stores throughout Broad Ripple, and it is our goal for this tap room to help increase awareness and grow consumer demand for Sun King at our retail partners in the area, just as it has at our other locations.”
Sun King, which acquired the brewing equipment, kitchen equipment and furnishings of Thr3e Wise Men, plans to begin renovations of the building Aug. 6.
